Kiwi Bookworms – Books keep kids tuned up during vacation
I review hundreds of books for KIWI Magazine and I am completely immersed in children’s literature. I often see very little distinction between YA literature and adult literature, except that the main characters are teens or the story is told from a teen perspective.
When I was vacationing in Maine, I read 16 YA chapter books which are all going to be reviewed on KIWI’s Bookworm page, in addition to regular book blogging here. This forum is for parents and kids to write in their favorite books and comment on books that KIWI has reviewed. There will be books representing all categories from picture books to cookbooks. We love to discover new books, so we would love to hear from you!

To be on vacation with an armful (or two!) of YA books…reminds me of being 11 or twelve years old! Baking in the sun with PERHAPS a Bain de Soleil 2 or 4 SPF (remember those?!), using Sun-In without care or consequence (or any sort of fashion-judgement)…How old I am to see how the world has changed.
I don’t really have any suggestions, and my daughter is only FOUR, but I have been wondering lately about those YA books. What the quality and caliber and themes are “these days.” Could there possibly be anything new that Madeline L’Engle and/or Judy Blume or Paula Danziger haven’t said? I used to be a teacher, so was fairly in the loop…but I fear that what was applicable then is completely out-dated, and even Judy Blume (who was shocking in the day), can’t resound completely anymore with young adults.
Thanks for being on the beat, Edamommy. Hope you are transported back in your reading. Eat some mental Marathon bars and drink some full-sugar, completely inorganic Mr. Pibb and refuse to suck in your tummy while you read!
