Keep Trash to a Minimum: Ditch These 10 Disposable Items

Every week I take out my trash and ask myself, “Is ALL of this stuff really mine?” While I am conscious of my trash consumption, some things are unavoidable. However, some things can easily be forgotten.

Here’s Planet Green’s list to let us know shutterstock_11120914.jpgwhat disposable products we can end our relationships with:

  1. Bottled water
  2. Diapers
  3. Air filters
  4. Paper towels
  5. Wrapping paper
  6. Individually-wrapped foods
  7. Takeout food
  8. Feminine products
  9. Razors
  10. Furniture

Their honorable mention: Takeout chopsticks

While there is a debate about the “green-ness” of bamboo fabrics, I think they make an awesome choice for re-usable, odor-eliminating, moisture-absorbing pantiliners. I’ve heard that it is possible to make bamboo fabric fibers mechanically, instead of using solvents, but that it might be difficult to find out how one’s bamboo fabric has been fabricated. Either way, though, I love using bamboo pantiliners (homemade out of bamboo terry cloth)…I haven’t found them for sale).

We re-use gift bags a lot, including fabric ones. I’m fascinated that the Japanese have been wrapping gifts in pieces of cleverly wrapped cloth for a long time.

Using less furniture is a great way to reduce furniture use, not to mention all the expense and housework and not-always-biodegradable linens and accent pillows that go with them. Mayan and Brazilian hammocks (of natural materials) make wonderful, biodegradable sleep options that promote health and have a low environmental impact while ALSO minimizing housework.
