Earth Day: Make a Green Resolution

Earth Day gives us a moment of reflection on ourselves and the environment. This year, make a green resolution. Here’s mine: I want to cook at home with lots of veggies at least 5x per week (if not more). We are joining a CSA so hopefully this will be easy (fingers crossed).

Do you have a green resolution? We want to hear so post it in a comment below. And so do our friends at Whole Foods Market. Post a comment on their blog to win a $25 gift card and a FEED 100 bag.

In light of our uncertain and challenging economic times and my own recent job loss due to company closing; I draw further and futher on my faith.

My green resolution is to walk my kids to and from school each day instead of driving since it is under 3 miles. :-)

After taking the bus every day, I keep the lights in my apartment off during the day when I’m home, since I don’t need them, and I’m growing my own garden on my balcony to share with neighbors and trade seeds with friends :)

I eat only raw vegan foods but on earth day I will be changing my diet so that the majority of my calories (80%) come from fresh, ripe, whole, organic fruits and vegetables. It is called the 80/10/10 diet and it supposedly does wonders for you health. I have been planning on changing to this diet for a while now, but have never had the guts to actually do it. I think that earth day is a great day to start because it will not only improve my health, but it will also drastically help the environment. I already save tons of energy from not cooking my food, and my carbon footprint is very small since I don’t drive a car and I don’t eat any animal products, but I still do eat a lot of packaged food. With 80/10/10 (the name of the diet I will be trying) I will save many resources by not buying so many packaged foods.

i would like to see every home with a water filter on their faucets and forever do away with plastic bottles piling up in the landfills.

Warm breezes are upon us-I can’t think of a better way to show my kids that we can use the power of the planet in old and new ways. I will hang my wash on a clothes line in the yard and use that to dry them. No dryers here while the breeze can do it for us. I can time my wash when I know the weather will comply and it should save on the need for ironing since clothes are crisp and smell so good!

We’ve joined a CSA this year as well. :) And much like Tara I will be walking my son to school instead of driving.

I will ride my bike to the stores in town instead of driving!

My resolution is to buy only plants and herbs in biodegradable peat containers. Why buy plants in plastic containers?

My green resolution is to plant a vegetable garden this year!! I will use pots & other containers as my other space is taken. I look forward to fresh salad supplies & some red peppers too!

In order to make my green resolution, I will make sure to use my plastic and reusable bags more for shopping instead of keeping them at home! I will make sure I have a small amount in the car so then I won’t forget.

I have committed to recycling everything possible.
Now that we have one of the big blue recycling barrells on wheels, it’s super easy!
Go green!!

I am going to go vegan and raw food for one day a week. This will build up up to half my weekly diet over the next 6 months and I’ll review it from there.

The reason for reviewing this decision is to give time to ‘adjust’ and also to do more research. My understanding from biodynamic, organic farmers is that animals are essential for natural fertilization. Phosphates presently used in conventional fertilizer production have peaked and we now have 30 years to total depletion at present consumption rates, and a 60 year window, if used judiciously. So, it seems that natural fertilizers – from animals and humans (!) are essential to organic food production.

I’m growing my own seedlings – they are 3-4 inches high now – and have ‘borrowed’ some friend’s backyards as I live in an area of toxic brownfield soils, to try and grow my entire vegetable supply for the year using permaculture methods.

As I’ve become unemployed this is essential income replacement and not having gardened for 26 years because of the soil toxicity, it’s going to be a great adventure!

My resolution is to cook more meatless meals this year. GLAD to have the chance to participate with Whole Foods!

I agree to get at least 100 signatures on the Repower America Petition and continue sharing info with people about what they can do to act locally.

Every day should be Earth Day….but in honor of the assigned day, I will pledge to walk to the closest mall, weather permitting. It’s about one mile each way.

I plan to ride my scooter, bike or walk to work each day at my new job.
resolve to ALWAYS use my re-usable bags instead of forgetting them in the car. :) I plan to invest in making my home and appliances more energy efficient this year. I plan to FINALLY put up my clothes line and start using it instead of the dryer.

I’ve already started growing most of my veggies. I plan to eat more meatless meals and try to buy as much local food as possible.

I am all for green resolutions, especially since they are eaiser to keep than say…giving up chocolate! My green resolution is to use the herbs and veggies we are planting this week on a regular basis in lunches and dinners made at home. I’ve got my WholeFoods little mini-shopper as a lunch bag, and a refillable bottle that I’ve replaced the plastic water bottles with. Hopefully there will be a green impact to match the one i;ve already noticed on our budget :)

I’m going to recycle despite living in an apartment complex! There are no separate plastic or paper bins, but if I collect them separately, there are places close by to take them rather than putting them in the huge bin at the complex all together.

I started making use of the newspaper plastic bags everyday for grarge work, gardening and picking trash as I walking my neighborhood. The newspaper bag is long and narrow which fits perfect as long gloves.

I also use the plastic bag when I paint with brushes for touch ups. Use the bag as gloves and hold the brush. Then when you are done painting reverse the bag as brush hold until next use. This method saves water to clean the bruses but you have to use the same color paint for next time.

SInce I use one color for touch ups it works for me.

I live in New Orleans, Louisiana. Before hurricane Katrina, we used to have curbside recycling that I was faithful in doing each week. Since Katrina, that has been discontinued. For years now, it has been very difficult to find places to recycle. Whole Foods was doing it for awhile, now its not in affect anymore. Recently, my parish has implemented, on the first Saturday of each month, a recycling program. You can take items to a participating area and they will forward to the recycling center. It may be a little inconvient, but at least it is SOMETHING! On Earth Day, the one thing I feel everyone should be doing is RECYCLING! In respect for our beautiful planet, I am comitting to the recycling event now planned in my Parish.

23 Lisa { 04.22.09 at 1:13 pm }

My mission is to teach my children well. They know to recycle, always take bags to the store with us, drive a fuel efficeint car, and they want to plant their own food to eat – so that is our biggest goal this spring.

I could not figure out exactly how to post my greenwise idea–
dont think you posted it well, PLEASE forward or tell me how to find/do it properly
but here it is:
No more paper napkins at my house-
only cloth ones-which can last thru sev. meals +
it made me pull out the pretty silver monogrammed napkin-rings, that were sitting in a drawer–which we got for wedding present long-time ago

For earth day I am driving less, walking to locals stores more. I live a mile from Whole Foods and the District so I walk there now. I continually try to use the reusable bags at various stores. If I forget, I ask for paper, not plastic.

I will continue to RECYCLE RECYCLE RECYCLE even though someone stole my curbside recycle bin. Since the incidence, I now retrieve extra boxes on my bi-monthly trips to Costco to store my reccycled goods. I have managed to get my trash down to one bag a week since I began my beloved recycling and I now bring my trash from my lunch break home to be recycled. Recycling ROCKS!

I’m a Professional Organizer in Chicago and owner of THE CHICAGO ORGANIZER (www.chicago-organizer.com), and I resolve to bring my clients’ items they’re disposing of to the right places: donation items to worthy charities, hangers to the drycleaners, plastic bags to the grocery store, sheets and towels to PAWS, electronic recycling to Goose Island, recycling to the Peggy Notebart Nature Museum drop off bins, etc! (Even if it means I have to go to more drop off locations than I normally would have to if everything just got dumped in the garbage.)

28 gizem { 04.22.09 at 5:22 pm }

For Earth Day, I am walking everywhere.I am trying to be careful about lights.I keep them switched off.Also I am using paper bags when I shop.I love whole foods.I always take my own bag when I go there to shop so I have a chance to donate too.I love veggies so I invariably use them in my meals.I recycle.Moreover I dont spend so much time on tv nor computer.I have just recyled my papers,glasses also some bottles.

29 Aimee { 04.22.09 at 7:11 pm }

I bought several commuter cups for coffee so I don’t waste a paper or styrofoam coffee cup on a daily basis from the place I get coffee each morning.

30 Jeanette Brown { 04.23.09 at 12:29 am }

I will grow more veggies in my garden this year. Will also sew more cloth bags.

31 Leigh { 04.23.09 at 5:49 am }

I plan on learning how to make my own cleaning products (laundry detergent, household cleaners, hand soap) in order to reduce the amount of harmful chemicals in my house, and to reduce the use of plastic bottles. I am really excited aboutr this – it should be great for my budget too!

32 Allysson { 04.27.09 at 10:09 pm }

I bought a clothesline this winter. I’ve used it, when ever the weather was dry enough, for drying my family’s bed sheets. I resolve to start using it more now that spring is here, and to dry some of our clothes on it too!
